Also known as the “dog head butterfly”, the California dogface butterfly is endemic to California, found only between north-central California and Baja California, between the Sierra Nevada and Coast Ranges.

The California dogface butterfly, gained its name as a result of the coloring of the wings of the butterfly, especially in the males. "The Zerene eurydice only has UV patterns on its dorsal forewings."

California’s state insect, the dogface butterfly, or doghead, has graced the California state driver’s license and a U.S. stamp. This bright yellow, orange and black butterfly can be found only in California.

Vicious debates ensued until it was agreed that the California Dogface should be our state butterfly. One of the major factors responsible for this decision was the fact that the California Dogface was the only one of the three candidates limited solely to California in distribution.

Zerene eurydice, the California dogface butterfly, belongs to the family Pieridae and is a sister genus to Colias. The Zerene eurydice and the Colias both share the "characteristic of having yellow-orange and black wing coordination ."

The California dogface butterfly or dog head, (Zerene eurydice,) was designated California official State Insect in 1972. The butterfly is found only in California from the foothills of the Sierra Nevada to the Coast Ranges and from Sonoma south to San Diego.
