Biancaea sappan is a species of flowering tree in the legume family, Fabaceae, that is native to tropical Asia. Common names in English include sappanwood and Indian redwood. [2] . It was previously ascribed to the genus Caesalpinia. [3] .

Caesalpinia sappan L. is a traditional medicinal plant belonging to family Fabaceae and geagraphically dispersed in the Asian headland embracing India, Burma, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and China (Jung et al., 2015).

Caesalpinia sappan is an evergreen Tree growing to 7 m (23ft) by 7 m (23ft) at a fast rate. See above for USDA hardiness. It is hardy to UK zone 10. It can fix Nitrogen. Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and prefers well-drained soil. Suitable pH: mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils.

It is used for inlaying work, cabinet making, violin bows and for walking sticks. The red color decoction from hardwood are used as dye on cotton, silk and wool fabric. Roots give a yellow dye. The tree is planted as hedge or boundary. Ellipsoid, flattened.

From the previous findings, the ethanolic fractionated extract of Caesalpinia sappan (F-EtOH) has high activity against Streptococcus mutans, the most severe cariogenic bacteria.

Caesalpinia sappan is a small shrubby tree which can grow up to 4-8 (-10) m tall. The roots are fibrous and wiry, lacking nodules and dark coloured. Its trunk measures up to 14 cm in diametre. The bark is with distinct ridges and with many prickles. It is greyish-brown when young while the twigs and buds are hairy and brownish.
