USS Midway (CVB/CVA/CV-41) is an aircraft carrier, formerly of the United States Navy, the lead ship of her class. Commissioned eight days after the end of World War II, Midway was the largest aircraft carrier in the world until 1955, as well as the first U.S. aircraft carrier too big to transit the Panama Canal .

The decommissioned aircraft carrier USS Midway (CV 41) prepares to moor at its final resting place at Navy pier where it will become the largest museum devoted to carriers and naval aviation.

Commissioned as CVB 41, the MIDWAY was redesignated as attack aircraft carrier CVA 41 on October 1, 1952, and multi-purpose aircraft carrier CV 41 on June 30, 1975. Today, the MIDWAY is serving as a floating museum in the city of San Diego.

In March 1965, the USS Midway (CV-41) departed her Bay Area homeport of Naval Air Station Alameda for her first combat deployment. Though no strangers to waters off Southeast Asia, the carrier and her air wing were now returning to this troubled region during a shooting war.

In January of 1989, I reported to VAQ-136 onboard USS Midway, CV-41. I spent almost three years aboard her, sailing the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and the Persian Gulf. In August of 1991 I left Midway and cross-decked to USS Independence, CV-62. After leaving the squadron in 1992, I spent the next six years with two other commands in Japan.

CVB-41 was the third American ship and the second aircraft carrier to bear the name of Midway. The name of the first USS Midway, AG-41, a fleet auxiliary, was changed to the USS Panay on April 03, 1943 to allow the Midway name to be used for an aircraft carrier.

After shakedown in the Caribbean, USS Midway joined in the Atlantic Fleet training schedule, with Norfolk her homeport. From February 20, 1946 she was flagship for CarDiv 1. In March, she tested equipment and techniques for cold weather operations in the North Atlantic.
