USS Saratoga (CV/CVA/CVB-60) was the second of four Forrestal-class supercarriers built for the United States Navy in the 1950s. Saratoga was the sixth U.S. Navy ship, and the second aircraft carrier, to be named for the Battles of Saratoga in the American Revolutionary War.

Commissioned as attack aircraft carrier CVA 60, the SARATOGA was redesignated as multi-purpose aircraft carrier CV 60 on June 30, 1972. Stricken from the Navy list on August 20, 1994, the SARATOGA was initially laid up at Philadelphia, PA., but was towed to Newport, RI., in 1998.

Aug 20, 1994 · On 27 August, aircraft from Saratoga and USS Independence (CV 62), both in the Arabian Gulf, began enforcing the no-fly zone south of the 32nd parallel in Iraq under Operation Southern Watch. Any Iraqi warplanes violating that airspace would be shot down.

The USS Saratoga (CVA-60) served during Operation Desert Storm from August 1990 until March 1991. She logged 11,700 arrested landings, 12,700 sorties, and traveled 36,382 miles. Her last deployment to the Mediterranean ran from January to early June of 1994.
