As Sicily, I wound up with 3 kingdoms (Sicily, Jerusalem, and Africa), but with elective succession I was having trouble keeping the three kingdoms all voting for the same person. I won a 4th kingdom in a crusade (Portugal), but I just got rid of it because I didn't feel like amplifying the election problem.

In the british isles you need to own most of the land in england, scotland, ireland and wales before you can create the Empire of Brittania. Or you can create a custom empire if you control 3 kingdoms and 80 counties, or 140 counties.

You make sure you go diplomatic route with some intrigue to save grace and get alliances without marriage (no negative inbreeding). The next thing is you keep tabs on your dynastic kingdoms.
