Sialyl LewisX (sLeX), also known as cluster of differentiation 15s (CD15s) or stage-specific embryonic antigen 1 (SSEA-1), is a tetrasaccharide carbohydrate which is usually attached to O- glycans on the surface of cells. It is known to play a vital role in cell-to-cell recognition processes.

CD15 is a carbohydrate-based molecule that is expressed in the granulocytic series, as well as in monocytes, macrophages/histiocytes, and various epithelial cells. It is not expressed in erythroid precursors, B-cells, T-cells, or NK cells, but it may be expressed in Reed-Sternberg cells and activated T-cells.

CD15 is a haemopoietic differentiation antigen expressed on most terminally differentiated myeloid cells including granulocytes, eosinophils, mast cells, monocytes/macrophages, and Langerhans’ cells. It is not expressed in red cells, platelets and lymphocytes (2).
