However, C++11 (which is what the 5th edition primer uses) is the absolute basis for modern C++. The C++ Primer is still one of the best C++ books you can get. I certainly cant think of a more complete/detailed book.

I'd reckon only a Tour of C++ is more recent, but, C++ Primer covers the material in a lot more detail. My advice to most C++ newbies is - Get C++ Primer, read a section. Get Josuttis' C++17 book and refer it to see if C++17 has bought any changes to a feature your read about in C++ Primer, or to learn any new C++17 addition.

The code typos in particular have been frustrating, but as a C++ beginner, I had no way of telling whether this was a good C++ book in substance. Should have dug around for a good review on it much earlier. The Amazon reviews are useless.
