After Hill City community members Robert and JoAnna Warder purchased the Black Hills Central Railroad in 1990, The 1880 Train experienced a rebirth. The existing operational locomotives (#7 and #104) were restored to prime condition, as were a number of the pieces of rolling stock.

Black Hills Central Railroad #63 is a GP9 model diesel built by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad as number 6178 in November of 1956 (builder number 22561).
