Bassoonists often indulge in an eternal search for the perfect bocal. As a result we tend to buy, sell, trade and collect bocals. There are a number of names for bocals. A few other common names would include crook, esse and pipe, Bocals are expensive and can be damaged by im-proper handling.

The Fox B bocal helps favor the lower partials of the bassoon sound to produce greater depth, more power, and a lyrical, dark tone. Fox B bocals are available in lengths 1 through 3, with #1 being the shortest length.

Fox C Bocals are our new entry-level bocal. They are the bocals provided with our Renard models 51, 41 and 222. C bocals are manufactured from nickel silver with silver plating.

A more modern addition to the Fox lineup is the *CTC* bassoon bocal, introduced in 2002 with thinner walls and greater flexibility than older designs. It's also a great choice for instruments with thick walls, as well as Heckel bassoons built after 1960.

Let's take a look at the traditional technique for making the bocal. First the sheet is prepared, cut into the shape of a trapezium. Then it is bent inwards from both sides, and solder applied to the join. When heat is applied the solder melts, and binds the two sides.
