Baroda State was a kingdom within the Maratha Confederacy and later a princely state in present-day Gujarat. It was ruled by the Gaekwad dynasty from its formation in 1721 until its accession to the newly formed Dominion of India.

Maharaja Sayaji Rao Gaekwad III of Baroda (1862‒1939) was one of the most extraordinary Indian princes of the colonial period. From 1875 to 1939 he ruled Baroda, western India’s preeminent princely state — and one of the most important ones in the subcontinent, along with Hyderabad and Mysore.

Baroda derives its native name Vadodara from the Sanskrit vatodara, meaning 'in the heart of the banyan (vata) tree. It also has other names, Virakshetra or Virawati (land of warriors), mentioned alongside Vadodara by the 17th century Gujarati poet Premanand Bhatt, native to the city.
