Arnold Ray McBride was born to Arnold and Wanna McBride on February 3, 1949, in Fulton, Missouri, about 25 miles northeast of the state capital, Jefferson City. The elder McBride, also known as Bake, pitched in the Negro Leagues with the Kansas City Monarchs, and was a teammate of Satchel Paige.

Bake McBride, a lefty outfielder, won the 1974 National League Rookie of the Year Award, making him the third player in Cardinals' history to receive the honor. The previous two Red Bird recipients, Wally Moon ( 1954 ) and Bill Virdon ( 1955 ), were both left-handed hitters, and both were outfielders!
