The Town of Babylon is one of ten towns in Suffolk County, New York, United States. Its population was 218,223 as of the 2020 census. Parts of Jones Beach Island, Captree Island and Fire Island are in the southernmost part of the town. It borders Nassau County to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. [2]

It is located approximately 25 miles (40 km) from New York City at the Queens border and approximately 33 miles (53 km) from Manhattan. Its official name is The Incorporated Village of Babylon. It is commonly referred to as Babylon Village, to distinguish it from the Town of Babylon, of which it is a part.

Babylon became the first incorporated village in the Town of Babylon, in 1893. The historic South Side Signal building which stood on the south side of West Main Street and, later, housed the Red Lion Pub.

Babylon Town has a rich and colorful past. History records that in 1710, Captain Jacob Conklin built the first home in what is now the Town of Babylon, hamlet of Wheatley Heights. Conklin sailed with the infamous pirate Captain Kidd. It is unclear whether Conklin was forced into service by Kidd or was a willing accomplice.

The Village of Babylon incorporated in 1893. Following World War II, the local tourist activity dwindled. Instead, the post-War suburban boom provided homes for returning veterans. With convenient train service to New York City, commuters, then like now, found Babylon a great place to live and raise a family.
