May 25, 2022 · SVT-AV1 is the "official" production encoder for the AOM software implementation group. Many people feel that AOM-AV1 gives a more efficient encode, but it does take longer to encode, doesn't parallelize as well, and it doesn't seem to be as well-documented.

Nov 8, 2022 · Since November, SVT-AV1 1.4 & Rav1e 0.6 were released. Would you say it still applies? And if you can spare a minute, perhaps you could comment on this as well: I settled on AOM for my current --cpu-used=3/4 (depending on source) and --cq-level=8 targets, thanks largely to your extremely helpful AOM settings threads.

Apr 10, 2024 · Even though everything I read about AOM being the reference and the highest quality implementation of AV1. streaming to youtube. looking like SVT is better, why? Also note I only tried 720p with low bitrate to compare.

Dec 18, 2023 · Did a basic transcode to AV1 using a slightly modified version of Handbrake. Handbrake is v.1.7.1 but I replaced the version of ffmpeg in the Flatpak with the latest SVT-AV1 1.8.0 version of ffmpeg, as detailed here. I didn't use any special settings or do anything with grain. This was just for comparisons.

Jul 12, 2022 · SVT-AV1 is not faster compared to it's effective efficiency. Yes SVT-AV1 has faster presets, however they are considerably less efficient then the fastest aom preset. Personally, if CPU > 4 in aomenc is to slow for you, I would use SVT, else aomenc is just better.

Feb 5, 2022 · I been trying to test SVT-AV1 and AOM-AV1 for archiving my game recordings in 1080p60 and some 1080p120 clips. It seems AV1 still needs higher bitrate than x264 to attain high quality detail preservation. But is much better than x264 at lower bitrates where streaming is concerned. I currently don't have comparison screenshots on hand right now.

AOM is what is known as a reference implementation, more-or-less designed as a program to create known valid AV1 streams that conform to the standard. It receives frequent updates that optimize image quality and speed a bit, but it isn't designed to be fast, it's designed to be a showcase of what the codec can do.
