Amphibian heart diseases are only occasionally reported and include genetic, congenital, infectious and neoplastic causes. At present, more than 8200 amphibian species are described, 1 including the 3 orders Anura (frogs and toads), Caudata (salamanders and newts), and Gymnophiona (caecilians).

In this review we present the major findings from recent research on the underlying mechanisms of fish and amphibian heart regeneration. We also discuss the tools and techniques that have been developed to answer these important questions.
