Alturas Lake is the southernmost of the Sawtooth NRA's big lakes. Tin Cup trailhead, which is an entrance to the Alice Toxaway Loop is located at Pettit Lake. Cabin Creek trail and Alturas Lake Creek trail allow you to hike into the beautiful Sawtooth Wilderness from Alturas Lake.

Alturas Lake Inlet campground has 28 large family campsites and is located next to the lake in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. There are 5 double sites, and campsites 2, 27 and 28 are the only ones on the smaller side (24 foot maximum).
