Adolph Joffe was born in Simferopol, Russia, on 10th October, 1883. The son of a wealthy merchant, he became involved in revolutionary activity while a student in the late 1890s. Joffe joined the Social Democratic Party in 1903 and the following year became involved in smuggling political propaganda to Baku.
