Ghost is a kayak; a sculpture, created by Adam Chodzko, as vessel, coffin, bed, costume and camera rig. Designed to give its passengers “the experience of becoming a spirit, gliding weightlessly through a landscape,” it ferries people to the ‘island of the dead.’
Calling out the hypocrisy and hostility of contemporary society, Chodzko’s keen observations and humour draw attention to where art’s purpose might lie in the world today – envisioning new ways of seeing, forms of empathy, and a conscious ecological awareness.
Chodzko’s The God Look-Alike Contest is trying, from this apparently banal and ‘poor’ context, to make something very special emerge into visibility. It is a search for a spiritual subject that has no image.
Chodzko is interested in how looking produces affect for the witness to an event, or for the subsequent viewer of its image. His work focuses on the possibility of being psychologically overwhelmed by the process of seeing.
Nightvision shows two mutually dependent visions produced by a crew that Chodzko assembled of lighting technicians (‘sparks’) who’s work is to facilitate the lighting for clubs and concerts.
