Acipenser is a genus of sturgeons. With 17 living species (others are only known from fossil remains), it is the largest genus in the order Acipenseriformes.

Sturgeon (from Old English styrġa ultimately from Proto-Indo-European * str̥ (Hx)yón - [1]) is the common name for the 28 species of fish belonging to the family Acipenseridae.

The Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus) is a member of the family Acipenseridae, and, along with other sturgeon, it is sometimes considered a living fossil. The Atlantic sturgeon is one of two subspecies of A. oxyrinchus, the other being the Gulf sturgeon (A. o. desotoi).

The Gulf sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus desotoi) is a sub-species of Atlantic sturgeon that ranges from Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana to the Suwanee River in Florida. Gulf sturgeon can grow to be 6 to 8 feet in length and exhibit similar life history traits to Atlantic sturgeon.
