On an SD45, SD45B, or F45, it meant the locomotive had been sold to MK and leased back (most but not all of these units eventually lost their Santa Fe lettering). On anything else (SD40-2, SDF40-2, SD45-2, SD45-2B) it meant Santa Fe still owned the locomotives, but that they were covered by an MK maintenance agreement.

ATSF 5855 is really an SD45-2. Santa Fe SD45's were in the 5300 and 5400 number series and SD45-2's were in the 5800 series just before the BNSF merger. Under BNSF, I believe both SD45 and SD45-2's are 6500's. Someone correct me if I am wrong. SantaFe

Four SD45's had Sulzer prime movers installed by MK in 1980-81, road numbers 5496-5499, but these were unsuccessful and replaced with 20-645's in 1985. Also in 1980-82, Santa Fe put 16-645's rated at 3500hp into a dozen SD45's, road numbers 5426-5437.

ATSF 5697 is an EMD SD45-2. Reportedly: ATSF 5697 was built by EMD in 1973 as an SD45-2 ATSF 5697 serial number 72642-11. In 1986 it was rebuilt to SPSF SD45-2u 7227. It was renumbered and repainted to yellow bonnet ATSF 5827 in 1991. It was renumbered BNSF 6477 in 1998 and subsequently renumbered to GN 6477. I hope you enjoy this post: Steve Sloan
