Verse 14. - Matthew only. Ye are the light of the world. After speaking of the moral tone that the disciples were to give to the world, in contrast to sin in its corrupting power, Christ refers to them as enlightening, in contrast to sin as darkness and ignorance.

What does Matthew 5:14 mean? In the previous verse, Jesus compared His disciples to salt (Matthew 5:13). Now He compares them to light. He calls them the "light of the world," in fact. Light was a crucial symbol in the Jewish worldview.

Believers are inherently called to be the light of the world, reflecting the light of Christ in their lives. Just as a city on a hill is visible to all, Christians are to live in such a way that their faith is evident and influential in their communities.
