May 31, 2010 · The use of epoxy over bare metal is a CHOICE that some guys make. Urethane primers (commonly called "2K" but ANYTHING with a catalyst IS a "2K" so I like to call it by it's proper name URETHANE) can be applied over bare metal or use an etch primer first.

May 14, 2005 · You can put urethane primer over bare metal but it will be a gamble IMO, hell for decades people were applying laquer primer over bare metal. I wouldn't risk it though, spraying a couple coats of epoxy first is my preferred way, some people like self etch.

Jan 2, 2010 · Are you talking about an actual epoxy primer or a 2K urethane primer. When people talk epoxy primer they don't usually call it a 2K epoxy primer, just epoxy primer. If you are using a 2K urethane primer you do not need to apply another coat before you apply color, just sand is smooth with 600. Vince

Feb 10, 2012 · I sprayed the entire car with Nason Select-Prime 421-19 2K urethane primer and block sanded to P400 dry. I then sprayed the two front fenders, the hood and the trunk lid with Nason Ful-Poxy 491-16 Epoxy primer blocked sanded dry to P400 and wet sanded to P500 ( I am planning to spray the whole car with Epoxy but my heated space is limited to panels at this time).

(If you elect to use an "etching primer" on the bare metal, then apply epoxy over that, and proceed with step #3) Yes you can apply 2K over epoxy, and vise versa.

Nov 16, 2005 · Also allows you the option of tinting for a color closer to the base if the 2K is off some for what you need. The better 2k's are good to go and most use sealer as "feel good" or just in case their sanding skill's are lacking. I personally have not used epoxy as a sealer coat so I can't comment on that.

Nov 21, 2014 · About 2K primer shrinking, it does! For my everyday collision repair I like to let it sit 24 hrs before sanding, and if I can, I wait till the next day after to paint. That gives 48 hrs and greatly reduces the shrinkage. If you cut and buff the final paint real smooth and let it go through a hot summer sitting out in the sun it WILL shrink some

Oct 4, 2009 · Of all the epoxies I've used ,SPI is hands down the best it also builds well so I dont use build primers (spray bondo)I like ez sand finising putty in place of building primers it much much cheaper and faster then recoat with epoxy,sand and paint,SPI epoxy is a fantastic sealer too,no need for anything else...it sands very well,all the way from 80 to 600 :thumbup: :thumbup:

Nov 21, 2010 · Thanks, im probably going to get some Valspar VP50 epxoy primer and some Valspar HS35 2k filler primer to go over it so I know there wont be an issue, the data sheet says the epoxy can be topcoated after 2 hours so im guessing the filler primer is the same, I have emailed them to confirm.

Feb 27, 2005 · Hi, I have just finished putting epoxy primer on my back fenders, running boards, and rear deck lid as I have finally got them reasonably staight and clean.I am wondering if I should put a coat of high build primer on them now, within my 3 day window for the epoxy?I'm wondering cause the pieces are going to need a little more work before the will be good to paint.Bondo was put onto bare metal ...
