I just traded in my 2003 vw gli-- this was a different car from past VW's as it was the most powerful VW at the time-- the VR6 was fantastic (sorry all you 1.8t and 2.0t owners) it was a car that on the streets would run hard and still get decent mpgs (mid 20's).. biggest worry I had with the VW was also the concerns with reliability.

I own a 2000 Jetta GLS standard 4 cylinder engine 70k+ miles. It too consumes oil, always has. Early on, I was told by VW that the engine is designed to do this. A car buff I know concurs - "essentially german engine theory is that burning oil in the process will improve the performance of the pistons, less friction, etc."

Recently my Jetta 2.5 turned off after stopping at a stop signal. The A/C stayed on, and I turned on the emergency lights. I shut off the A/C.

2003 Jetta has a serious jerk when it shift to 2nd. Sometimes. maybe more ofen when its cold. When it had 20,000 we took it back to dealer and they didnt something (dont know what) and it didnt occur for a while then it started once a month and now its down to once a week. its out of warranty now so VW wants me to pay to have them look at it.

According to the Bentley Manual (covering 1993-1999 Golf/Jetta and 1995-2002 Cabriolets) right in front of me, VWs from early 1997 production (and on) SHOULD be used on all water-cooled VWs. So unless she has a VW made before 1997, any antifreeze that is used other than G12 is an invitation for costly engine problems....
