Japan experienced significant inflation in the early 1900s, and then runaway inflation plus debasement during the war. By 1948, 1 yen was a small brass base-metal coin worth about 1/360 of a dollar.

2011年4月24日 · Any silver 1-yen coin dated 1871, 1872 or 1873 (Meiji 4, 5, 6) is probably fake. Any Japanese silver coin dated 1872 is probably fake. All Japanese minor silver coins (50-, 20-, and 10-sen) were minted in 1873. Why 1873? Probably the same reason why there are fake 1864 Seated Liberty dollars that have CC mintmarks and In God We Trust.

In 1897, the silver 1 yen coin is demonetized and is no longer legal tender when Japan adopted the gold standard. The most likely reason is because of the Sino-Japan war as it would have drained Japan's finance drastically.

I'm trying to find sources to compare various die markers with, but mostly it's just been comparing images online to what I see on my coin. So, I'm hoping that someone more well-versed than I take a look at this Japanese silver coin for a verdict. The edge reeding appears similar.

2013年12月11日 · I have both a 10,000 yen coin and a 100,000 yen coin. They were issued to commemorate the 50th or 75 or something (?) year of Hirohito's rule. Japanese citizens had to get into a lottery to get one of each. My mother-in-law got me one of each (nice lady). The metallic value and a link to stated value has not been relevant for MANY years.
