For over 10,000 years the Xolon Salinan People, also known as "People of the Oaks", inhabited California's Central Coast and inland to the Diablo and Temblor Ranges. Our ancient territory also includes the Santa Lucia Range as well as the lands encompassing the Salinas River.

Many in our tribal family today, who are on our tribal rolls, (including myself) are related to one of the first Spanish leather-jacket soldiers who came with Serra to our land.

Salinan Tribe of San Luis Obispo and Monterey Counties
Our 13 known villages stretched from Monterey County to the Santa Maria River, inland along the Temblor Mountains, and all along the coast, from Big Sur to south San Luis Obispo County. We lived along the length of the River now known as the Salinas with which we share our name, from its Adelaide headwaters flowing north into Monterey.
