One of five companies in the United States supplying the federal government with military aircraft fighters and bombers during the 1990s, Rockwell International emerged from the end of the Cold War as an increasingly commercially-oriented company.

Rockwell International sold its aerospace and defense units to Boeing in 1996 to focus on its operations in industrial automation, avionics and communications, and electronic commerce. In 2001 it announced plans to spin off its avionics business and rename itself Rockwell Automation.

Operated from 1952 to 1992 by private contractors, Dow Chemical Company, Rockwell International Corporation and EG&G, the complex was under the control of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), succeeded by the Department of Energy (DOE) in 1977. The plant manufactured 1,000 to 2,000 pits per year.
