Rio Vista is a city in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,008 in 2020. [4] Rio Vista is located in southern Johnson County. Texas State Highway 174 passes through the west side of the city, leading north 8 miles (13 km) to Cleburne, the county seat, and southwest 30 miles (48 km) to Meridian.

Rio Vista soon drained the populations of the nearby hamlets of Derden, Nathan, Hart, and Sullivan and by 1900 Rio Vista had all the commercial components to make a town thrive. A fire in 1914 destroyed many of the businesses but the town survived.

On March 21, 1801, after several trips into the area of the Sabine River, Phillip Nolan advanced inland with a party of eighteen men as far as the Brazos River.
