Tomb KV11 is the tomb of Pharaoh Ramesses III. It is located in the main valley of the Valley of the Kings. The tomb was originally started by Setnakhte, but abandoned when it unintentionally broke into the earlier tomb of Amenmesse (KV10). Setnakhte was buried in KV14.

The Tomb of Ramesses III, KV11 lies in the Valley of the Kings, amidst the mysterious desert sands that hold the secrets of ancient pharaohs and gods. The entrance to the tomb is a simple carving on the limestone cliffs, but it leads to a place of great significance – a pathway to eternity.

One of the most popular tombs in the valley, KV 11 is also one of the most interesting and best preserved. Originally started by Sethnakht (1186–1184 BC), the project was abandoned when workers hit the shaft of another tomb (KV10).

King Ramses III turned Tomb KV 11 axis to the west before continuing to dig new corridors southward, when he decided to complete the tomb as his own burial place. The King stands wearing the crown of Lower Egypt offering incense to gods Atum and Ptah, on the left (east) wall.

The tomb of Ramesses III in the Valley of the Kings has been open since Antiquity. In modern times it has attracted visitors since the 1790 publication of James Bruce’s drawings of two harpers which are depicted in a small chamber in the second corridor. Since then, the site was known as the “Harpers tomb” or “Bruce’s tomb”.

The tomb’s intricate decorations and layout provided valuable insights into ancient Egyptian beliefs about death and the afterlife.

The project aims to preserve, document and publish the tomb of Ramesses III (KV 11), situated in the Valley of the Kings. Due to water damage and thousands of years of degradation processes, the rear part of the tomb has been destroyed. Our aims are to study and conserve the tomb in order to make it fully accessible to the public.
