The Mackinac Bridge is currently the seventh-longest suspension bridge in the world by total suspended length, and the longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere. The bridge opened to traffic on November 1, 1957.

History of the Bridge - Mackinac Bridge Authority
The bridge was officially begun amid proper ceremonies on May 7 & 8, 1954, at St. Ignace and Mackinaw City. The bridge opened to traffic on November 1, 1957 according to schedule, despite the many hazards of marine construction over the turbulent Straits of Mackinac. The last of the Mackinac Bridge bonds were retired July 1, 1986.

In 1998, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan became the longest in the world, stretching 12,826 feet when measured by total suspended length. The Mighty Mac is unique among other high-ranking suspension bridges due to its long and fully suspended side spans.

Mackinac Bridge Current Conditions
Currently we are experiencing winds of sufficient force in the Straits area (20 - 34 mph) to issue a warning to all motorists preparing to cross the Mackinac Bridge. Examples of vehicles which are especially vulnerable to high winds are pickup trucks with campers, motor homes, vehicles pulling trailers and enclosed semi-truck trailers.
