Vinyl seems to have a memory of it's original shape and will find it again when heated. Hot water will not damage vinyl like direct heat from sunlight, a heater or hairdryers will! I even clean CD's like this - it's the only method i have found that will not leave any marks whatsoever on the surface. Only difference is the drying method.

The main issue with cleaning of records is lifting the dirt out. I use IPA isopropanol with distilled water 1:4 mix with few drops of kodak fotoflo to thin the liquid further.
