The Elgin National Watch Company, commonly known as Elgin Watch Company, was a major US watch maker from 1864 to 1968. The company sold watches under the names Elgin, Lord Elgin, and Lady Elgin. For nearly 100 years, the company's manufacturing complex in Elgin, Illinois, was the world's largest site dedicated to watchmaking. [1]

The Elgin National Watch Company went completely out of business and halted operation in 1968. One of Elgin's last logos is pictured here at the right. It continued to be used for a time, into the 1970s as the trademarks passed to other organizations. But Elgin proper never made a quartz product, or a modern clock.

In 1962 Elgin simplified the identification process by introducing the "Case Components Book". By using the 4 digit case back number, its possible to identify the hands, crown, gasket and crystal required for your model (this book of couse doesn't provide model names). The Case Components Book is extremely scarce to find in paper print.

It’s a Navy deck watch with a chrome-plated brass screw-back encasement. It has a crown beneath the 12-hour and the Elgin logo in capital letters above the 6-hour. Some of them had hunter cases, while others were open-framed designs.
