Yes, it's still a good route to go. They are currently that sweet spot of performance vs. price. The motherboards aren't that expensive if you buy them used or find a system that has low end E5-26xx V1 CPUs and swap them out for the E5-2670.

People go with the E5-2670 because of the horsepower to price ratio of the used models. They're $70, are 8 core 16 thread, and support dual CPU boards as well as stupid amounts of RAM. Newer architectures will almost always use less power.
