Now the input jack (the part with the prongs) is loose and won't attach to the charging cord easily and doest seem to be charging when it is.

Inside the OBDII port, the power lead there is always on and gives voltage straight from the battery. If there's power there, the OBDII device you have hooked to it will draw power, so will drain the battery.

The airbag light or ABS light (and even the check engine light) will all blink the codes when the OBD-II connector is properly bridged. For example if it blinks 5 time slow and 1 time fast you have a 51 code. All you'll need is a paper clip. This video below will demonstrate how to do it.
