Aldgate (/ ˈ ɔː l ɡ eɪ t /) was a gate in the former defensive wall around the City of London. The gate gave its name to Aldgate High Street, the first stretch of the A11 road, that takes that name as it passes through the ancient, extramural Portsoken Ward of the City of London.

Aldgate Pump is a historic former water pump located at the junction where Aldgate High Street meets Fenchurch Street and Leadenhall Street in the City of London. The pump is considered to be the symbolic start point of the East End of London.

St Botolph's Aldgate is a Church of England parish church in the City of London and also, as it lies outside the line of the city's former eastern walls, a part of the East End of London.

St Botolph's Church, Aldgate, or just Aldgate Church, is a Church of England liberal inclusive parish church in the City of London standing at the junction of Houndsditch and Aldgate High Street. The current 18th Century church is made of brick with stone quoins and window casings.

Aldgate was the original London gate on the road towards Essex. The Roman road out of Aldgate led east towards the original Roman capital of Britain at Colchester, and it remains as a very straight road through Whitechapel, Mile End, Stratford and beyond.

2022年2月24日 · Based on archaeological research, we now believe that there were six Roman gates, and seven double gates by the Medieval period. The seven double-gates of London were Aldgate, Bishopsgate, Moorgate, Cripplegate, Aldersgate, Newgate, and Ludgate.

St Botolph Aldgate is located on the eastern edge of the City of London, straddling the border with Middlesex; part of the parish was in the City (in Portsoken Ward), and part in Middlesex (East Smithfield). A long, thin parish, it stretched from Gravel Lane (off Houndsditch) in the northeast all the way to the Thames in the south.

Aldgate High Street was closely located to where the eastern part of the original Roman Wall, and in the medieval period, it led to town of Colchester in Essex. Because of its connection to places outside London, Aldgate High Street was vital to the geography of medieval London.

2023年5月29日 · Aldgate was one of the six original Roman gates built into London Wall. The Church of St Botolph without Aldgate – known as the prostitutes church in Victorian times owing to their perambulation around the church, thereby avoiding the charge of solicitation.
