What is Yaqona (Kava) Dieback Disease? It is a virus disease caused by CMV (Cucumber Mosaic Virus). The CMV is spread from plant to plant by aphid insect (Aphis gossypii). Called ‘dieback’ because it starts from the leaf and ‘melt down’ to the stem and even to the root.

Kava can refer to either the plant or a beverage made from its root. The beverage has sedative, anesthetic, psychoactive and mildly euphoriant properties. It is consumed throughout the Pacific Ocean cultures of Polynesia, including Hawaii and Vanuatu, Melanesia, some parts of Micronesia, such as Pohnpei and Kosrae, and the Philippines.

As the aphids feed on diseased plants they pick up the virus with their mouthparts. If they fly to healthy plants and feed again, those plants become infected. The melon or cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii) is common on kava as well as on many other crops and weeds. The virus is also spread when cuttings from infected plants are used for propagation.
