Three of my favorite cartridges require a certain VTA setting of level +1/2 mm to sound their best. Lowering or raising them by 1 mm or so changes the sound unacceptably. One cartridge I had wasn't finicky at all with VTA and sounded the same +/- 2mm .

I use a acrylic block to measure VTA - you can buy one on ebay or Amazon for about 10-15 dollars. Some folks use an index card, adjust by ear, or use a test record and measure IMD.
