The 7.62 mm Dragunov sniper rifle has been the semi-automatic marksman rifle of the Russian infantry and other military units since 1963. The SVD is designed to engage enemy personnel and other unarmored targets at ranges up to 800 m. It features reliable gas-operated action with a short-stroke piston and gas regulator.

The SVD may be the world’s most iconic sniper rifle despite not technically being a sniper rifle. Developed to be integrated into every Soviet army squadron as a support weapon similar to a machine gun or grenade launcher, the SVD only had to be accurate enough to effectively engage enemy targets at a max of about 800 meters.

The Dragunov uses the 7.62 x 54mmR cartridge, with a muzzle velocity (The velocity of bullet leaving the rifle) of over 830 meters per second and has a maximum effective range of 1,300 meters with the scope and 1,200 meters with the iron sights. The basic design is largely based on the AK-47, an assault rifle.
