Alain Pumir studied physics at the École normale supérieure in Paris, and obtained his PhD in 1987 under the supervision of Yves Pomeau. After a postdoc at Cornell University (USA), he joined the statistical physics laboratory at ENS Paris in 1989.

Direct Numerical Simulations of turbulent flows at large Reynolds numbers with a very high resolution have been used to probe our understanding of the extreme velocity gradients that can form in a turbulent flow.

Born in 1959, Alain Pumir was a student at the École normale supérieure in Paris in 1979. He obtained the "agrégation" of Physics in 1983 and a state thesis in 1987 – Three-dimensional vortices and interfaces in Hele-Shaw cells – under the guidance of Yves Pomeau.

Professor Pumir is an internationally recognized leader in the field of nonlinear physics. He has recently developed novel ways to study fluid turbulence. His approach, based on the study of particles carried by the flow, has led to much needed new fundamental insights and progress.

By analysing the structure of the flow in regions where the vorticity is the highest, we propose an approximate expression for the pressure Hessian in terms of the local vorticity, consistent with the existence of intense vortex tubes.
