I'm trading money for a formal 3-5 year training plan where I'll be for first assisting, procedures (chest tubes, arterial lines, central lines, pericardiocentesis, etc), managing patients in the ICU, managing patients in the burn ICU, and cross coverage for general/neuro/pediatric surgery.

Perfectly fine not placing chest tubes or central lines so I’m very happy in my role. If you want to be in charge of those real sick patients either work critical access as a PA, or become a physician. This is just my experience though. Seems like some PA’s manage critically ill patients on a regular basis on their ED’s.
