2023年3月20日 · Since the 1950s the Nantucket Historic District Commission has enforced strict rules to preserve the island’s unique architectural character, and these efforts are unmistakable in the downtown area.

The Nantucket Historic District, which encompasses the entire island, was designated to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. Nantucket has over 800 pre-Civil War buildings and has been called the “finest surviving example of an early New England seaport.”

In 1955, Nantucket was one of the first communities in the nation to establish a local historic district. Originally encompassing only the Old Town and the Village of Siasconset, the local historic district regulates exterior changes.

The entire island, some 30,000 acres, constitutes the Nantucket Historic District (a National Historic Landmark District), making it the largest historic district in the United States. The core of the local historic district was first formed in 1955 making it among the oldest in the nation.

In the mid-20th century, Nantucket’s unique charm and historic character began to attract tourists. Efforts to preserve the island’s historic buildings and natural beauty gained momentum, leading to the creation of the Nantucket Historic District and other conservation initiatives.
