Lviv (/ ləˈviːv / lə-VEEV or / ləˈviːf / lə-VEEF; Ukrainian: Львів [ˈlʲwiu̯] ⓘ; see below for other names) is the largest city in western Ukraine, as well as the sixth-largest city in Ukraine, with a population of 717,500 (2022 estimate).[4] .

As a part of Poland (and later Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth) the city was known as Lwów and became the capital of the Ruthenian Voivodeship, which included five regions: Lwów, Chełm (Ukrainian: Kholm), Sanok, Halicz (Ukrainian: Halych) and Przemyśl (Ukrainian: Peremyshl).

At the outbreak of the war Lemberg – together with Cracow and Przemyśl – was one of the biggest garrisons of the Austro-Hungarian army in the east and was of great strategic importance. It was a cornerstone in the protection of Austria-Hungary against Russia.

It was named for Leo, son of Daniel, prince of Galician-Volhynian Rus', who founded the city in the mid-thirteenth century. In 1349 the principality was incorporated into the Polish crown under Casimir III the Great. Lviv became the capital of the Ruthenian palatinate in 1434.

The Battle of Lemberg (Lviv, Lwów) (in Polish historiography called obrona Lwowa, the Defense of Lwów[2]) took place from November 1918 to May 1919 and was a six-month long conflict in the region of Galicia following the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Lemberg grew dramatically under the Austrian rule, increasing in population from approximately 30,000 at the time of the Austrian annexation in 1772, to 206, 100 by 1910; while the poverty in Austrian Galicia was raging.

In the twentieth century, L’viv (Ukrainian: Львів, Polish: Lwów, German: Lemberg, Russian Львов), now a city in Ukraine, experienced war not just once but many times. Between 1914 and 1947, the city went through seven regime changes and was shelled by Russian, Ukrainian, German, and Soviet artillery and bombed by German and Soviet planes.

In 1773 Lviv was ruled by Austria under the first partition of Poland until the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918. Austria changed the name of Lviv to Lemberg, and made it the capital of the Kingdom of Galicia. Austria contributed parks, cobble stone streets, and an opera house.

Jews lived in the city from the time of its establishment in the mid-thirteenth century; some, mostly merchants, were Sephardic residents who later mingled with Askenazic immigrants.

Lviv was then renamed “Lemberg,” and many streets and squares got new, German names. The German occupation, which began with a pogrom and a Ukrainian nationalist attempt to found a state brought new ruptures, most devastatingly the genocide of the city's Jewish population.
