2016年10月27日 · Lac operon is regulated by the presence of lactose in the growing medium. When Lactose is present in the medium, it binds to the repressor molecule. This prevents the repressor molecule from binding to the operator region of the operon and thus RNA Polymerase can bind to the operator region and transcribe the genes.

The bacteria use these sugars as a source of energy. In the absence of lactose, the regulatory gene produces a repressor protein which binds on the operator gene and makes it inactive. This prevents RNA polymerase from transcribing the operon. So, the lac operon shuts down sometime after the addition of lactose in the medium.
