History of HMS Hermes (R12) His ship was laid by Vickers-Armstrong at Barrow-in-Furness as HMS Elephant during World War II. Construction was suspended in 1945, but work to clear the slipway resumed in 1952, and the hull was launched on 16 February 1953.
