The Elliott State Forest was established northeast of Coos Bay in 1930 as Oregon's first state forest. The Hanis (Coos) and Quuiich (Lower Umpqua) people are the original people and stewards of the lands that we now refer to as the Elliott State Forest.

Elliott State Forest is a state forest in Coos and Douglas counties of the U.S. state of Oregon, between Coos Bay and Reedsport in the Oregon Coast Range. [2] The first state forest established in Oregon, it is named after the state's first state forester Francis Elliott. [3]

Beginning in 2019, Oregon State University (OSU) and the Oregon Department of State Lands (DSL) worked collaboratively to explore transforming the Elliott State Forest into a publicly owned state research forest.

The Elliott State Forest contains more than 41,000 acres of untouched mature native forest and some of the most productive and pristine streams for Coho and Chinook Salmon in the Coast Range. The forest provides a stronghold of critical habitat for federally threatened Marbled Murrelets and Northern Spotted Owls.
