When you come to see us, it's best to see the Ruins first (ideally entering from Cuckoo Lane) and only then to explore the New Cathedral. In both cases, you'll understand and enjoy them much more, if you know what to look for and what it means.

The first was St Mary's, a monastic building, from 1102 to 1539, of which only a few ruins remain. The second was St Michael's, a 14th-century Gothic church designated as a cathedral in 1918, which remains a ruined shell after its bombing during the Second World War, apart from its tower and spire, which rise to 284 feet (87 metres).

The Ruins are the remains of a medieval parish church, consecrated to be the Cathedral of the new Diocese of Coventry just 22 years earlier, in 1918. The decision to rebuild the Cathedral was taken the morning after its destruction.

2024年10月9日 · St. Mary’s Priory and Cathedral. The original Coventry Cathedral was St. Mary’s Priory and Cathedral, founded in 1043 by Leofric, Earl of Mercia, and his wife, Lady Godiva. It was a Benedictine monastery and had one abbot and 24 monks.

Beside the ruins of the medieval cathedral is the third building to act as Coventry Cathedral; a striking modern building designed by Sir Basil Spence, with the help of some of the leading artists and architects of the day.
