Named in honor of the 35 th president of the United States, John F. Kennedy who was assassinated on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, TX., the USS JOHN F. KENNEDY was the first ship in the Navy to bear the name. Initially commissioned as attack aircraft carrier CVA 67, she was redesignated as multi-purpose aircraft carrier CV 67 on December 1, 1974.
