The 55-mile reservoir between Newport and Box Canyon is a gateway for visitors to enjoy the splendor of this natural wonderland. Campbell Park, at Box Canyon, provides a beautiful campground, swimming, and other outdoor activities for travelers and local outdoor enthusiasts.

As part of its FERC license for Box Canyon Dam, the PUD is required to provide upstream fish passage for three native migratory salmonid (salmon trout and Char) target species: Bull Trout, Westslope Cutthroat Trout, and Mountain Whitefish.

On October 8, 1951, Pend Oreille PUD filed an application with the Federal Power Commission (“FPC”) for the construction and operation of the Box Canyon Hydroelectric Project (the “Project”). The FPC issued the PUD’s first license for the Project on February 5, 1952.

Box Canyon Dam is a run of the river project. The Corps of Engineers operates Albeni Falls, the upstream project, to accommodate flood control, power generation, environmental, biological, and other requirements.

To achieve these goals at high-use, publicly accessible sites, the PUD provides intensive mechanical aquatic plant removal at 23 different treatment areas in the Box Canyon Reservoir at multiple times throughout the year.
