Zygentoma are an order in the class Insecta, and consist of about 550 known species. [1] The Zygentoma include the so-called silverfish or fishmoths, and the firebrats. A conspicuous feature of the order are the three long caudal filaments. The two lateral filaments are cerci, and the medial one is an epiproct or appendix dorsalis.

Silverfish are fast-running insects that hide under stones or leaves during the day and emerge after dark to search for food. A few species are resistant to desiccation and well-adapted to survive in domestic environments such as basements and attics.

When the Archaeognatha were recognised as a separate order of insects, the remaining group of silverfish, firebrats and their relatives were sometimes still known as the Thysanura, but to avoid confusion with the older broad grouping they are now generally called the Zygentoma.
