This northern city in the Canadian Shield boasts a 60-kilometre-long formation called the Sudbury basin, which is brimming with nickel, copper, cobalt, gold, silver, platinum and palladium deposits. It’s also been home to Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations since 1929.

The Sudbury Smelter forms one part of our Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (Sudbury INO). A history of innovation has played a prominent role at the smelter contributing to tangible environmental improvements over time, including decreased sulphur dioxide emissions.

As part of the journey of nickel, we receive, store and ship materials through our port facilities based at the Port of Québec in Quebec City. Our facilities are divided into two sections: one for nickel concentrate from Raglan Mine and one for nickel matte from Sudbury INO.

Nickel Rim South (NRS) Mine began production in 2009 and is a nickel, copper and precious metal deposit. The anticipated life of mine extends through 2024. NRS is situated near the Sudbury airport 20 kilometres northwest of Sudbury.

On May 13, 2024, our Fraser Mine, part of our Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (Sudbury INO), was awarded the 2023 John T. Ryan National Trophy for Metal Mines for the best safety performance in Canada from the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM).

In July 2023, our Sudbury INO team carried out a site visit to its Nickel Rim North Mine tailings area with Wahnapitae First Nation (WFN) to witness first-hand the progress of the Tailings Removal Project, which is part of overall reclamation efforts at the site.
