The Curtiss SB2C Helldiver is a dive bomber developed by Curtiss-Wright during World War II. As a carrier-based bomber with the United States Navy (USN), in Pacific theaters, it supplemented and replaced the Douglas SBD Dauntless. A few survivors are extant.

The SB2C was the third carrier-based dive bomber called “Helldiver” and produced by Curtiss. “Hell diver” was a heroic and death-defying name for both pilots and aircraft in the popular American imagination beginning in the 1920s.

The SB2C-5 was the last major variant in the series. It was an improved version of the SB2C-4 with increased fuel capacity of an additional thirty-five gallons, a frameless pilot’s canopy, tail hook fixed in the extended position, and deletion of the propeller spinner.

This particular plane model and squadron is credited with attacking and sinking remnants of the Japanese fleet at Kure as well as participating in Operation Ten-Go where they assisted in sinking Yamato, Yahagi, Isokaze, Hamakaze, and Asashimo on the doomed mission.
