In Windows 10, Tablet mode is a separate feature and can be turned on at the customer's discretion. So you can turn on tablet mode even if you're connected to the Type Cover.

Go to Download driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Book. Then click the link next to Surface Book 2 then click Download on the next page.

You can detach the tablet part of the Surface Book 2 while the device is off. Just press and hold the detach key until the light goes green.
